How to deal with insomnia? How to fall asleep or sleep better at night? Many people find it difficult to fall asleep or have a restful night when they have too many things on their minds. Some think about whether they would lose their jobs during times like this, some wonder if they are doing enough to help their children learn while staying home, and some brood about the issues in their marriage, etc.
It would be helpful to practice the following steps so that you can manage those worries and be able to fall asleep easier:
1. Notice when such thoughts come to mind
2. Ask yourself, what is within your control, and what is not?
3. Accept that certain things are not within your control
4. Determine the responses to those things that are within your control
If you have been thinking about a particular issue for an extended period of time and it seems like you can’t “get it out of your head”, it might be helpful to first find an activity that can distract your mind. Activities such as watching a comedy, de-cluttering your room, planning meals to cook for the next few days are considered healthy and helpful activities. When you feel calmer and the mind is less “busy” with thinking about worries, follow the steps above.
Remember, be kind to yourself during difficult times like this. It is normal to be concerned about things that matters to us. If you find that you need more help with managing those worries, speak to a counsellor.
